Burn Baby Burn (this is for John)

Today we began the prescribed burnings on site. They are a maintenance routine done about every other year to recreate a longleaf pine savannah fire that would occur naturally by lightening. I was supposed to be working on the pond... but I couldn't pass that up the opportuninty, so I found some time to help out with the fire!

  1. Stray Coal Fire Starter. The image in full burn is sweet. Fortunately the burn year fell on your time there (not to say you couldn't just go around and light fires, i would support this).
So what was so controlled about it? Did you prepare the surrounding burn site to limit the flames mobility? or did you extinguish the flame when you saw fit.

  2. Precisely... the trail system during burn times become 'fire breaks'... they are cleared of all flammable material (pine needles/brush) pre-burn. We judged the wind on average in order to have a safe back-burn. A head-burn goes with the wind and can get out of control easily. The areas we burned were between 2-4 acres at a time, but sometime soon I am going to help out with a 40 acre burn!
